A Fourier-Based Algorithm for Modelling Aberrations in HETE-2's Imaging System
The High-Energy Transient Explorer (HETE-2), launched in October 2000, is a
satellite experiment dedicated to the study of gamma-ray bursts in a very wide
energy range from soft X-ray to gamma-ray wavelengths. The intermediate X-ray
range (2-30keV) is covered by the Wide-field X-ray Monitor WXM, a coded
aperture imager. In this article, an algorithm for reconstructing the positions
of gamma-ray bursts is described, which is capable of correcting systematic
aberrations to approximately 1 arcmin throughout the field of view.
Functionality and performance of this algorithm have been validated using data
from Monte Carlo simulations as well as from astrometric observations of the
X-ray source Scorpius X-1.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables; Nucl.Instr.Meth., in pres
Effects of the Lattice Discreteness on a Soliton in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model
In this paper we analytically study the effects of the lattice discreteness
on the electron band in the SSH model. We propose a modified version of the TLM
model which is derived from the SSH model using a continuum approximation. When
a soliton is induced in the electron-lattice system, the electron scattering
states both at the bottom of the valence band and the top of the conduction
band are attracted to the soliton. This attractive force induces weakly
localized electronic states at the band edges. Using the modified version of
the TLM model, we have succeeded in obtaining analytical solutions of the
weakly localized states and the extended states near the bottom of the valence
band and the top of the conduction band. This band structure does not modify
the order parameters. Our result coincides well with numerical simulation
works.Comment: to be appear in J.Phys.Soc.Jpn. Figures should be requested to the

Quantum Nernst effect in a bismuth single crystal
We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect
observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the
edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst
coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also
evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically. Our
result agrees with the experimental result for a bismuth single crystal.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Proceedings of ISQM-Tokyo '0
Design and Performance of the Wide-Field X-Ray Monitor on Board the High-Energy Transient Explorer 2
The Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) is one of the scientific instruments
carried on the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) satellite launched on
2000 October 9. HETE-2 is an international mission consisting of a small
satellite dedicated to provide broad-band observations and accurate
localizations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). A unique feature of this mission is
its capability to determine and transmit GRB coordinates in almost real-time
through the burst alert network. The WXM consists of three elements: four
identical Xe-filled one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counters,
two sets of one-dimensional coded apertures, and the main electronics. The WXM
counters are sensitive to X-rays between 2 keV and 25 keV within a
field-of-view of about 1.5 sr, with a total detector area of about 350 cm.
The in-flight triggering and localization capability can produce a real-time
GRB location of several to 30 arcmin accuracy, with a limiting sensitivity of
erg cm. In this report, the details of the mechanical
structure, electronics, on-board software, ground and in-flight calibration,
and in-flight performance of the WXM are discussed.Comment: 28 pages, 24 figure
